San-Dee

A plastic bags holder

“San-Dee” is a plastic bags keeper or “Home for Plastic Bags”. San-Dee is creatively designed in order to increase the environmental awareness of both children and adults starting from the thinking process, waste sorting to reusing. Once waste is separate from plastic bags, these plastic bags can be kept in San-Dee by dropping it in the top opening. They can also be easily pulled of the bottom opening when needed. San-Dee is one of the Yala Bird City’s products and designed to look like a saba (banana). Saba is used to feed birds in Yala and both saba and birds are the symbol of Yala, representing the economic center of ASEAN birds competition or Yala Bird City. There are three sizes of a San-Dee set. San-Dee size A is for holding big plastic bags. San-Dee size B is for holding small plastic bags. Sand-Dee size C is specially designed to be used as a multi-purpose handbag for holding mobile phones or accessories.

The increase in use of plastic bags has been on the rise due to the increase in consumption. In general, plastic bags are single-use and waste is not sorted from plastic bags. This posts serious threat to the waste management system and environment. As a result, separation of waste from plastic bags and reusing the plastic bags will effectively extend resource usage. The design concept of “San Dee” is “Reuse”. The design is meant to encourage everybody in a family to reuse plastic bags and to reduce the amounts of plastic bags currently produced nowadays. The design is focused on making it easy to keep and take plastic bags and look attractive to be a household decoration.

Remarkable features of the “San Dee” design are: (1) employing the “reuse” concept in order to reduce amounts of plastic bags, (2) cleverly coming up with a method to keep and take plastic bags and also designing the shape to fit with the Yala Bird City symbol, and (3) having two sizes of the bags in order to separate the plastic bags size and also their usage. For example, the big size ones (Size A) are for keeping big plastic bags used for containing dry items, which can later be reused. As for the small size ones (Size B), these are for keeping small plastic bags used for containing wet items, which can later be discarded. For Size C, this size is specially designed to be used as a multi-purpose handbag for holding mobile phones or accessories.

The initial design concept of “San Dee” was the intention to reduce the use of plastic bags, which has been on the rise due to the increase in consumption. Separation of waste from plastic bags and reusing the plastic bags will effectively extend resource usage. As a result, “San Dee” bags are part of the campaign to increase awareness of environmental responsibility. In addition, calico textile is made locally by the community in the southern provinces of Thailand affected by the unrest and troubled economy. Therefore, “San Dee” helps increases sustainable income to the local community, which is also the key to solve the social and economic problems.
